About the Author
After the success of Channel 5's programme The Dog Listener ('It was amazing.' - The Daily Mail), Jan Fennell will appear in her own series in Autumn 2000. Jan has previously appeared on Yorkshire tv, in the series Problem Pooches. She lives in Lincolnshire but her work takes her all around the country.

One says this person is the best and the book being reviewed is crap

If you read every single review if every single dog training book you will be very confused. One says this person is the best and the book being reviewed is crap, another says an entirely different person is the best.

I am a dog professional (trainer, sitter, walker, etc.). One of the main reasons there is such a disparity in views about how to train a dog is that there is such a disparity in dogs. The positive method works really well....if you have a nice easy dog, like a lab. But if you have a high energy dog that wants to be the boss, all the positive training in the world won't keep them from lunging at the end if the leash or being wacky and what people consider ill-mannered.

This author is one that I turn to over and over again for advice and just basic grounding. She always brigs me back into communication with my dogs. Her techniques work with all dogs, and are more advice on how dogs think and how to live in harmony with them than what you will learn on obedience. I use all forms of training in my practice, and don't rally understand why there is so much conflict over methods. Of the major trianers writing out there, I have found none to be harmful to dogs in any way. Every dog is different and every dog needs you to come to them with love, compassion and a dedicated purpose. For example, if you have a beagle, get used to barking, because that is what they do. If you have a great pyranees, don't let it off leash if you want to see him again. A lab requires a very different approach than a Jack Russel (Parsons) terrier.

My suggestion is read everything from everyone and find yourself a nice balance.

With that said, this book is a great place to learn all about Jan Fennell and her techniques. It is easy to read, and is concise.

A revelation

Jan Fennell's book taught me how to understand my two and a half year old husky's behaviour. I learned the significance of projecting myself as pack leader and have been amazed at the results. From being a hyper and dominant dog, he has calmed down and is now well bahaved most of the time. He doesn't pull me on the lead anymore except when we meet a herd of goats but we're working on it! As Jan says, it's a lifestyle and the book needs to be read several times.

About the Author

Mack Wilberg is the Music Director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. He was appointed Music Director in March 2008, having served as Associate Music Director since May 1999. He is a former professor of music at Brigham Young University, where he received his bachelors degree; his masters and doctoral degrees are from the University of Southern California. In addition to his conducting responsibilities he is active as apianist, choral clinician, composer, arranger, and guest conductor throughout the United States and abroad. In addition to the many compositions he has written for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, his works have been performed by artists such as Renee Fleming, Frederica von Stade, Bryn Terfel, The Kings Singers, and narrators Walter Cronkite and Claire Bloom. Long time coming for a disappointing book.

Came home tonight to find this on my front porch! I have been waiting not just the last 6 months since I ordered it but since the movie came out way back in 1999.
I looked through it over dinner. Felt like something was missing. I think it was not the best idea to feature so much bad art that was done before Brad Bird came to the project. I also felt like they should have included more of the beautiful background paintings that were done for the film. Also, the color script pages were dark and unclear.
I'm a little disappointed.

I was looking forward to this book for a while - I've loved the artistic direction, color and style choices and have used them as references for years. What could be better than a book filled with storyboards, character sheets, colors, environments, etc - all from the movie? Well... that's not quite what this ended up being. The book reads as ... here's a bunch of comp art that we sorta thought was ok, well maybe it sucked - but then this new guy came around and changed the art direction - so now we'll compare what sucked to what doesn't suck - and on and on...

I would have been thrilled with seeing the final movie art direction - not all of their failed attempts before getting it right. The book is basically filled with the art that didn't make it. Can't win them all!

The Art of the Iron Giant - Book Review

The Iron Giant remains one of the most highly-regarded animated movies. It's a beautiful film, and to coincide with the release of the signature edition blu-ray set, Insight Editions has published a book equally as beautiful. The Art of the Iron Giant contains what fans have been waiting for a long time - an in-depth look behind the scenes of the film and it's art department.

The book begins with a foreword by director Brad Bird, who writes about his involvement in the project. The text then discusses the challenges of the film, with focus on the design and animation processes. The artwork in the book varies greatly -- some of it is from a previous incarnation of the film that was planned prior to Bird's involvement; and then obviously the artistic progression into the final visual style you recognize on-screen. Those who know the film will know that it has a unique look which blended a computer generated 3D-character and a traditional 2D environment.

The Iron Giant himself went through various design iterations, and it's fun to see what could have been. Many of the designs are cool-looking, but the final design also gives the character a real personality. Additional chapters show the art of the human characters, as well as the settings in the film (including Hogarth's house and the power plant). Finally, the book concludes with a look back at the legacy of the film and an appreciation of the artists involved in making it a reality. Dozens of team members recall their experiences - including storyboard artists, animators, and composer Michael Kamen.

This is one of those few books that will likely rise greatly in value over time. Sometimes I recommend waiting to buy art books for a few months until the retail price drops and remainder copies go on sale - but in this case I recommend picking this one up as soon as possible because a fresh new copy may be difficult to find down the road (Amazon is already showing a 1-2 month backorder at the time of this review).

However, a factor hindering the extensive use of series capacitive compensation is the potential risk of subsynchronous resonance (SSR). The SSR is a condition where the wind farm exchanges energy with the electric network, to which it is connected, at one or more natural frequencies of the electric or mechanical part of the combined system, comprising the wind farm and the network, and the frequency of the exchanged energy is below the fundamental frequency of the system. This oscillatory phenomenon may cause severe damage in the wind farm, if not prevented. Therefore, this book studies the SSR phenomenon in a capacitive series compensated wind farm. A DFIG-based wind farm, which is connected to a series compensated transmission line, is considered as a case study. The book consists of two main parts: Small-signal modeling of DFIG for SSR analysis: This part presents a step-by-step tutorial on modal analysis of a DFIG-based series compensated wind farm using Matlab/Simulink. The model of the system includes wind turbine aerodynamics, a 6th order induction generator, a 2nd order two-mass shaft system, a 4th order series compensated transmission line, a 4th order rotor-side converter (RSC) controller and a 4th order grid-side converter (GSC) controller, and a 1st order DC-link model. The relevant modes are identified using participation factor analysis. Definition of the SSR in DFIG-based wind farms: This part mainly focuses on the identification and definition of the main types of SSR that occur in DFIG wind farms, namely: (1) induction generator effect (SSIGE), (2) torsional interactions (SSTI), and (3) control interactions (SSCI).

simple and complete

Very good, I am very happy with the book. It's as simple as reggae, good to to differ the various techniques for piano and organ, it's makes you practise different tonailities within the exercises, and has a long section about how to join the techniques of piaqno and organ, lead and rhythm all together, very good if you are the only keyboard player in the band!

Very good book. One thing that could be approved upon is to play the exercises with out the back round track so you could really hear what's going on especially with the organ bubbles.
