it's okay but not necessary for experienced electricians

I bought this solely for taking the Masters exam because I was told there is questions on the exam from this book as well as the NEC. This book is difficult to navigate, more so than the NEC, I did find that the questions that are on the Maters exam ,that are in this book, you should and probably already know If you're an experienced electrician. The trick to getting around in it is the index. It does have a ton of useful information in it and it's cool to have around as an electrician but if you're buying this as an electrical installation manual please don't and seek proper training.

To this end, the CIA's Directorate of Science and Technology is indispensable. As the group responsible for creating the tools that allow the spymasters to do their jobs, the DS&T has been "a key element in the history of both the CIA and the entire intelligence community," writes Jeffrey Richelson, a specialist on American intelligence operations. In The Wizards of Langley, he traces the directorate from its inception in 1947 to the present, analyzing each aspect of its activities and responsibilities in exhaustive detail, along with the infighting and political wrangling that have accompanied its growth.

As Richelson points out, there were some missteps, such as administering LSD to scientists without their knowledge (one committed suicide as a result), employing cats as bugging devices, and the use of psychics, but overall the DS&T has made "an enormous contribution to U.S. intelligence capabilities and national security." Notably, the directorate has developed the U-2 spy plane and some of the U.S.'s most important surveillance satellites, and has been a pioneer in photointerpretation, the collection of signals intelligence, and foreign missile and space programs analysis. In recent years, the media have presented several reports on the tragic and scandalous 1953 death of army scientist Frank Olson. Ten days before Olson died, a Central Intelligence Agency researcher had slipped a dose of LSD into the unwitting Olson's drink. The hapless army scientist quite literally went mad and leapt to his death from the window of his New York hotel room. Press accounts have couched Olson's death as the work of a sinister CIA. In Richelson's even presentation, the Olson case, horrific as it was, is less representative of a CIA run amok than it is of a paranoid Cold War mentality in which the nation's premier intelligence agency was tasked with developing extraordinary measures for extraordinary times. The directorate responsible for those measures is the focus of this fine and meticulously researched study by master Langley-ologist Richelson (The U.S. Intelligence Community, etc.). Richelson places into context the directorate of science and technology's operations, from sci-fi-style remote-viewing experiments to very practical scientific advances that would eventually find application in heart pacemaker technology. Espionage aficionados will recognize a set of familiar project code names: JENNIFER, MKULTRA and others. Familiar spy personalities are also in abundance: Ray Cline, William Colby, Richard Helms. But Richelson expounds on what's already known, giving new insights into such matters as the development of U.S. aerial and space reconnaissance systems. The evolution of the aircraft that would become the SR-71 Blackbird spy plane is particularly fascinating, as is the story of the New York Times's investigative reporter Seymour Hersh's apparent agreement to a 1972 request from the CIA to withhold the true mission of the Glomar Explorer, a spy ship that had been dispatched to recover a sunken Soviet submarine. Not James Bond ... and Definitely Not 'Q'

David Letterman once described his TV show as 'info-tainment without the "info" ... or the "tainment."' I'm tempted to describe this book as a technothriller without the 'thriller.' It definitely has the 'techno,' though.
Let me say up front that I don't think this is entirely author Jeffrey Richelson's fault. He is one of America's top historians of the intelligence community, and this book is exhaustively researched and documented (the first chapter alone has 173 endnotes). I just found the subject of all this research much less exciting than I thought it would be. For all their sci-tech wizardry, the 'wizards of Langley' were, at the end of the day, still a bunch of bureaucrats. Their battlefields were as much institutional as geopolitical, and that makes Richelson's story bureaucratic and institutional too.
Maybe I was spoiled by Bamford's 'Body of Secrets,' about the NSA, which combines technological detail with exciting stories of front-line espionage, but it seemed to me Richelson sometimes took too light a touch on interesting operational stories in order to get back to chronicling the CIA's changing organization chart. The attempted recovery of a sunken Soviet submarine, or the infamous BLUEBIRD-ARTICHOKE-MKDELTA experiments with mind-altering drugs, for example, were zipped over in just a couple of pages. It is true, though, that these topics are covered extensively in other books.
In all, I can see how 'The Wizards of Langley' will be useful for people interested in the personalities and politics behind a key element of America's intelligence apparatus. Journalists or specialist historians, for example. But I'm afraid the general reader with an interest in intelligence operations may find this book rough, and even unrewarding, sledding. It's for that first group -- for whom this book could be an excellent resource -- that I'm giving it as high a rating as I am.

Well Researched but Poorly Written

I must agree with previous reviewer comments. This book attempts to describe the Directorate of Science and Technology, yet it focuses on the bureaucracy of upper management and has little discussion regarding the programs and technologies created by the DS&T. This organization has played a cricial role in shaping modern history, yet the book is dull and uninteresting to read.

An informative history of the U.S. intelligence efforts over the years to use creative technology to gather information. A chronology of how the desire for intelligence spawned the U2, the SR-71 and spy satellites and also how the agency discovers cutting edge technology which it sometimes releases to the private sector to be applied. Unfortunately the writing is very dry with too much focus on the history of internecine rivalries and power struggles which will probably not interest the average reader. A good read in order to get a balanced view of the value of the CIA which is often maligned and under-appreciated.

By deploying Mary's symbolic valence to infuse certain characters, and dramatic situations with feminine potency, Espinosa analyzes how Shakespeare draws attention to the Virgin Mary as an alternative to an otherwise unilaterally masculine outlook on salvation and gendered identity formation.

' Katharine Goodland, CUNY College of Staten Island, author Female Mourning and Tragedy in Medieval and Renaissance English Drama 'Persuasively argued, this study confirms what scholars have been slow to recognize - that the Virgin Mary was a powerful presence on the English stage. Although the Virgin May may have been marginalized by Protestant theology and polemic, her potency, comfort, and efficacy could not be erased from the English psyche and was available for reimaging on the early modern English stage.' Renaissance Quarterly '[Espinosa] is careful not to be too reductive; his argument is not one-to-one mapping of Marian symbology, but a careful, nuanced hunt for motifs that both sustain and potentially disrupt conceptions of Protestant, English masculinity.' A fantastic jerky book for carnivores and vegitarians!

First off, the recipes in this book are phenomenal, we have yet to make a jerky that wasn't a smashing hit! The book features beef, chicken, pork and turkey recipes, along with fish, fruit and veggies for your dehydrating tastes! If you don't have a dehydrator there's even a section for alternative drying means and instructions. The book also features beautiful full color photos of about a third of the jerky recipes.

A great cook book for you or a great gift for a family member!

Mostly hype for HP's "memristor"

The book neglects most of the history of memory resistance effects such as the work on thin film memory resistance based on metal oxides and chalcogenides in the 1960's and the use of memistors by Bernard Widrow in early artificial neural networks (ADALINE, MADALINE) in favor of the hype of Chua's "fourth fundamental circuit element" which is not of much use to realistic neural modeling.

While there are a few interesting sections such as the chapter discussing biologically-inspired electronics by Di Ventra and Pershin this material is basically a rehash of other material published online for free. For example see the review article "Memory effects in complex materials and nanoscale systems" which is available for free on the Cornell arXiv database.

For those interested in neuromorphic modeling I would recommend saving their money and instead buy On Intelligence by Jeff Hawkins which provides a much more compelling model.

Very good book. I would have given it 5 stars but was disappointed that the first invocation we had planned was to Ma'at and She is not included in the book.

I had never encountered such a beautiful and holy rendition of what the role of a male is in our society and especially in the family.... As a woman, I found myself say "yes, absolutely, Oh I hope many men read this and do it". I found myself falling in love with Our Lord Jesus Christ and the role of man and being so thankful to G.C. Dilsaver for taking the time to write a book on a topic so demonized....

I really liked this powerful book

This is a book I will use as operating system for the rest of my marriage. It is not that new of an idea, traditional marriage, in the grand scheme of history for the last 2000 years. However, it presents a way of family life where the man is in charge only because he is serving his family and specifically his wife as Jesus would do. I can see how many would take this book way way out of context but if this old ideal of patriarchal based marriage is truly understood then everyone wins BIG. Men become better leaders at home and at work; women become more fulfilled because they can focus on their family.

The surprising thing for me is that this Christ centered patriarchal based marriage in it's pure form has not really ever been followed in large numbers. There are plenty examples of the man being in charge in authority over decisions (king) but that is where it stops. This book covers three aspects, priest, prophet, & king. Most secular men are only king... if that. Leading his family in religion is also key, and leading his family in protecting and providing for the future in a stable secure way for those who depend on him is also key. King is last because his authority comes from Christ through the first two aspects.

The discussion in this book on the current matriarchal based family is not new in other words. High society for thousands of years ago were run by matriarchy. The reason being that the men were too concerned about having their bedtime privileges revoked so to speak.

If a man is priest, prophet and king all three build a trusting structure of authority which generates boat-loads of love in the family and the children and wife all look up to that father and husband and will follow him out of respect not out of fear. To drop one of these aspects is similar to removing a leg of the tripod and so we see in today's world of broken families where the commitment to death do us part is not there and therefore the authority structure is crippled. We see where the required exclusivity between spouses is not there and therefore that family is destined to being crippled or broken. All these broken families all because of the strength of the king in the family being non-existent. It needs to be lead by the father, the prayers need to be insisted upon by the father, the morality needs to be maintained by the father. Only because of a reciprocal love within the family unit would this be possible.

I find this book to be a field guide for men and women in dedicated Catholic families. I will be spending the rest of my life strengthening the quality of my roles. Priest, prophet, and king.

This is the best book for men that I have ever read and I've read a few. This book lays the cards on the table so to speak. I'd recommend it and I'd buy it again if I lost mine.

Iakov N. Vorobeitchik (MD, PhD) is an active member of the Moscow Academy of Psychotherapy and an honorary president of the Scientific-Practical Association of Psychotherapists of the city of Odessa, which he led for eighteen years before moving to Moscow. He is one of the founders of modern autopsychotherapy, psychohygiene, and educational psychotherapy. Stuart A. Kauffman was educated in Philosophy, Psychology and Physiology at Dartmouth and Oxford, obtained his medical degree from UCSF in 1968 and has devoted himself to often seminal work in biology and areas of physics and economics since.

A Joy Ride Through the Universe.

Stuart Kauffman, one of our greatest scientists, is a passionate humanist. "Humanity in a Creative Universe" expands on and elaborates his long-held view of the universe as a wonderfullly unpredictable system that creates novelty and complexity at a furious pace. Kauffman's universe is not a lot of empty space with a little bit of stuff scattered through it, as some physicists argue it is. Nor are human beings insignificant fragments of that stuff, but exceptional and fascinating products of the its creativity. For Kauffman this is a joyous realization, and he makes no effort to conceal his delight in this view of life and the world.

Kauffman knows that we are all aware of our thinking, feeling and choosing selves, despite what the physicists may say. He wants to eliminate the gap between what we know and feel intuitively and the scientific dogmas that tell us everything that happens was already determined when the Big Bang was so mysteriously initiated, driven by just a few simple physical laws. Kauffman explains that the laws of physics alone cannot account for the biological universe, just as the laws of biology cannot account for what we think and feel. The laws must evolve along with the phenomena they govern. Each individual E. coli of the millions in the physicist's gut is more complex, more interconnected, more interactive and more energy efficient than the entire non-biotic universe.

A good place to begin in understanding Kauffman's thinking, is with the concept of "the adjacent possible". In earlier books, describing the evolutionary process, Kauffman has referred to the set of all the possible evolutionary outcomes from a single mutation in any one of the thousands of genes an organism possesses, as "the adjacent possible" into which the organism can evolve. Natural selection winnows these possibilities to a very few that can be actualized in a viable organism. But the number of the adjacent possibilities is so vast, and the circumstances that might favor one over the others so complex. that the outcome of the evolutionary process cannot be known in advance. He illustrates this idea with the homely example of a screwdriver. He asks the reader to specify all the possible uses for a screwdriver. It can't be done. Someone will always be able to come up with a new one.

In "Humanity", Kauffman draws out the implications of the idea of the adjacent possible, beginning with its undermining of the scientific dogmas of reductionism and determinism. This project leads Kauffman and "Humanity" in many directions, which I can't begin to describe here, although quantum mechanics and consciousness, and the possible links between them appear prominently. Some of his explorations lead to conclusions that seem both brilliant and obvious, all are imaginative and fascinating, a few perhaps too far a stretch to be completely convincing. Each reader will have his own assessment of this mix. But the process of sorting out Kauffman's ideas for oneself is an exciting adventure I can recommend to everyone.

Kauffman's writing is not always easy to follow. "Humanity" is not written in a linear style, like a textbook. Kauffman keeps returning to old material in new contexts, making new connections, seeing more deeply into the issues. Sometimes it seems as if a whirlwind has just passed through. But you don't have to worry. There's no examination. "Humanity in a Creative Universe", as enlightening as it may be, is a pleasure trip.

An extremely interesting and important look at an intellectual revolution

This book is the most interesting and profound exploration I know of the intellectual revolution underway in a host of disciplines though still resisted by much of the academic establishment. Briefly, it acknowledges emergence. You might read this book together with The Singular Universe and the Reality of Time: A Proposal in Natural Philosophy, The Neural Basis of Free Will: Criterial Causation (MIT Press), The Neural Basis of Free Will: Criterial Causation (MIT Press), and Dance to the Tune of Life: Biological Relativity.

An important treatise on creativity as a universal constant

Stuart Kauffman's Humanity in a Creative Universe is the culmination of his exploration of our creative universe. Like his other books, Kauffman weaves complex discussions of quantum theory with observation and opinions on everyday life. He argues with evidence and passion that the progress humanity has reached it's limit in how much can be achieved through reductionist approaches. Kauffman argues persuasively that quantum mechanics shapes existence whether it be the infinite combination of chemicals, ideas or tools we can produce.

Much of what we now know to be empirically validated about our own quantum existence was anticipated and articulated by the author over the past 40 years. "Humanity in a Creative Universe" argues that an enternal creative impulse -- the adjacent possible -- informs the emergence of the universe and human endeavor. While a recent reviewer criticized Kauffman for discussing global warming, banking failures, etc, the fact is the limits and dangers of today have been repeated throughout history.

Further, Kauffman's point is that such challenges can be addressed, but not by relying on reductionism. In doing so, we may continue to make progress but fail to comprehend that in doing so we remain blissfully ignorant, convinced that we have obtained great insights when in fact we are (to paraphrase and borrow an observation Churchill made about Neville Chamberlain) we are looking at the world through the wrong end of a municipal drainpipe ."

Ultimately Kauffman expresses the concern about the impact excessive reductionism will have on humanity's creative capacity that Joshua Lederberg had about it's negative effect on medical progress. Lederberg noted, "My fear is that in the great excitement of this new wave of knowledge, we may lose some of the convergence, the feel for the organism, the natural historical context, the excitement and provocations that come from clinical observation which in my view will be necessary not only to further clinically important needs but even to give us the most important revolutionary findings within biology itself."

Kauffman's book demonstrates that the loss of such a convergence -- as well as the profound feeling of discovery it engenders -- is essential to our spiritual and material well-being. Reductionism seduces us into believing we have complete knowledge. Kauffman demonstrates empirically that the uncertain is the possible, that we are always at the intersection between the known and the imagined. The future of humanity consists of discovering always something commensurate to our capacity for wonder.
