Proffessor DonJacob is one of the leading martial arts practitioners in the world.Indiginous to the Caribbean country of Trinidad and Tobago he has founded his own system called Don Jitsu Ryu in 1976 and has been involved in martial arts for over 40 years and currently holds a ninth degree rank as a black belt.
This book allows the reader to be privy to the insights,philosiphies,conduct and code of ethics of the Don Jitsu Ryu system.It gives a comprehensive inner perspective to the style and lifestyle that is this system.
This is a must read for anyone involved in this system or interested in joining Don jitsu Ryu Or anyone that has an appreciation for good martial arts

Not only a great book and a must read for those in the Purple Dragon Don Jitsu Ryu system but it also a book for life. There are many lessons in this book that I have passed on in my teachings with young people in the community. It is a book in which I continually reference - "a must have".

As the son and grandson of physicians, Sinclair Lewis had a store of experiences and imparted knowledge to draw upon for Arrowsmith.Published in 1925, after three years of anticipation, the book follows the life of Martin Arrowsmith, a rather ordinary fellow who gets his first taste of medicine at 14 as an assistant to the drunken physician in his home town. It is Leora Tozer who makes Martin's life extraordinary. With vitality and love, she urges him beyond the confines of the mundane to risk answering his true calling as a scientist and researcher. Not even her tragic death can extinguish her spirit or her impact on Martin's life.

About the Author
Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951), was born in Sauk Centre, Minne-sota, and graduated from Yale in 1907; in 1930 he became the first American recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Main Street (1920) was his first critical and commercial success. Lewis's other noted books include Babbitt (1922), Arrowsmith (1925), Elmer Gantry (1927), Dodsworth (1929), and It Can't Happen Here (1935).

Science and greed in a constant battle

Arrowsmith is possibly Sinclair Lewis's greatest accomplishment. That is no meager compliment; Lewis is one of the greatest of American twentieth century novelists. He was a contemporary of Upton Sinclair and Jack London. Like them, he was an unapologetic socialist. But, unlike Upton Sinclair, his socialism was cleanly understated. He wove his social conscience cleanly into the story line. Upton Sinclair preached it, beating the reader over the head with it.

In Arrowsmith, Lewis intricately details the path through life of a dedicated man of science, torn between pure science, healing, and money-making. Often, his choices are seemingly random, dictated mostly by chance. The writing is, as always, descriptive and compelling. As with almost all of his work, it is no easy, one-night's plaything. The characters are numerous, each with his or her's own substance and role. They come and go throughout his life, occupying distinct places in his journey. The plot is sometimes slow, but often with surprising, often cruel, twists of fate. Each can come as quite a jolt to the reader.

Lewis has a unique ear for dialogue; it is easy for the casual reader to miss the sarcasm and irony for which he is famous. But beneath the irony there is always his understated plea for the common man; decency and kindness are woven inextricably into the story.

Small Minds,Money and Science

Martin Arrowsmith of Elk Mills is destined to become a Doctor from an early age; eternally curious despite the many diversions and barriers put in his way as he journeys to med school to internship to country GP to vanity medicine and surgery for profit until he reaches the near paradise of the McGurk institute. Always there are small minds and the obsession with wealth and social position and the general feeling that there must be something wrong with Martin Arrowsmith who has scant interest in anything but pure science....
Lewis's famous satire and morality tale, where the hero is the victim of narrow minds, egos and cash obsession rather than the promoters of such sins (as with Babbit and Elmer Gantry) This is still remarkably contemporary ; Lewis would have had a field day pulling apart and lampooning todays millionaire plastic surgeons whose only interest is the pay cheque that their vain Hollywood clientele are more than willing to pay in order to look like grotesques , and their ancestors of medicine for profit and social status are all in this wonderful novel.
Sinclair Lewis deserves far more recognition for what a great writer he is ; it is a shame he seems to be forgotten where Steinbeck, Hemingway and Faulkner are more revered Nobel winners. All his great novels from 'Main Street' to 'Dodsworth' all written in an extremely fertile and productive decade, deserve to be read , not least because they are enjoyable and full of -still!- very sharp barbs.

The First and Last Temptation of a Man of Science

Bottomm Line First Bottom Line First: Sinclair Lewis’s Arrowsmith was something of a break through novel. It is considered the first novel to directly address science and medicine as a plot driver. It is also a character study but of a particular kind of person. Not just a scientist, or a medical practitioner, but a person with an avocation. Lewis allows us to mature with a very believable, flawed human as he acts as a common, everyman finding and facing his destiny. Martin Arrowsmith Is not an outsized hero. He is someone rather like us, but still not of us. Martin Arrowsmith is an everyman and the question is, is it in us, through him to be a hero? Arrowsmith is a recommended read for almost any audience. It can be irreverent toward religion, but there is a respect for the religious. There is no bad language and no violence. However this is perhaps too thoughtful for the young and the details of the plague can be unsettling. Do not let the medical vocabulary throw you off, Arrowsmith is something anyone can read and enjoy.

We meet Arrowsmith as a very young person, already fascinated by medicine. He is the friend of one of the local medical doctors, an otherwise broken drunkard who allows this young person to perform as a town medical man. More so than could happen in our time. Next we go with him to a remote and minimally established public college/medical school. Here his performance will vary based on the kinds of influence one could expect in a crowd of immature and unsophisticated college kids.

Among the things that make this extended introduction a superior example of writing is that the real theme is introduced and isolated in ways that will not be fully realized in any one place before the end. For example Arrowsmith spends a summer performing the hard physical labor of a lineman and enjoying this turn. That is, he is not to be criticized as too pampered to handle real work.

Arrowsmith is a modern version of Pilgrims Progress. Along the way he will find what may seem to the reader as paradise, only to have Lewis take us one step deeper where we may find we, the reader has accepted Vanity Fair over our hero’s real goal.

Product true to picture. Good quality, simple to read paperback instructional book for origami.

This is a simple to read instructional book for paper folding/origami. The book is step by step picture instructions. I got this for my 12 year old son along with a pack of origami paper ( 40 Color Origami - 120 Sheets ). This is simple to read and easy enough for him to understand. This will be a fun activity for us to do together and on his own.

Bought this for my 6 year old who can easily follow the instructions to create origami. He loves it! Make sure to purchase some origami paper to go with it as ours did not come with any. We also bought a plastic container to hold the papers so as not to damage them in storage (folds, tears and bends in paper make creating origami difficult and frustrating).

A Great Book for Creating Unplugged Things to Do

I've been looking for projects that they can do that don't require electronics or turning on anything. The project inside this book vary in difficulty, but all of them look like they'll be fairly easy for the kids. All we need is a stack of paper, maybe some scissors and perhaps some watercolors or gel pens to decorate our final products with. Many thanks to John Montroll for creating this wonderful book.

Josephson focuses as much on Edison's work as he does on the man, and the book can be somewhat technical at times. It is natural to compare it to Neil Baldwin's EDISON: INVENTING THE CENTURY, written in 1995, and Josephson's Edison is much more solid than Baldwin's. Baldwin sacrifices the inventions while dealing mainly with the man; Josephson is much more rounded and deals with all aspects of Edison's life. Highly recommended.

In depth and very readable

I had been looking for something to get me past the grade school biographies that I remember reading about Edison -- this is the best biography of the inventor that I have read. Not only does it dispell many of the myths surrounding Edison (he didn't come up with the idea for the incandesent lamp; he was not made deaf by a conductor chastising him for a fire with his chemistry set), but it highlights his major work not in individual inventions, but in combining his inventions into systems ... that were both practical and profitable.
The book is very readable, and goes into just enough depth about his personal life (of which he had very little) and his public and professional lives. The only negative is that because it was written in the early 1950's, it is missing a perspective that could be added by 50 more years of luxuriating in the lifestyle which Edison has made possible.

Still Readable

"It's still burning" was the phrase repeated as the light bulb stayed lit longer and longer. The same phrase was used by Edison's son to keep the death-vigil crowds informed as the great man lay dying, as relayed by this author. Unlike the Edison method of great volumes of empirical data patiently sifted down in huge experiments, the author deftly moves in and out of topics in a refreshingly constrained manner, which he really has to do to keep his book medium-length and still cover a lot.
The middle to the end of the book explores some very important themes, where there are irreconcilable problems with some of Edison's later inventions and the marketability of the resulting products. Like the ore-smashing enterprise in New Jersey, which worked, but not at a market profit. Same thing with the goldenrod-into-rubber operation in Florida.
These then become background for some surprisingly sensitive observations on Edison, made by his friends John Burroughs and Henry Ford. Ford is too sentimental to shut down the funding of the hopeless goldenrod operation; and Burroughs gently points out how Edison in his later years at least, contradicted his personal core-beliefs about sleeping and eating food (He sleeps till 10 am, "bolts half a pie," dumps tons of sugar in his coffee, then lectures on how Americans should eat less and sleep less).
The disconnect which also developed between Edison and his children is developed against the backdrop of Edison's inability to relate to the scale and demands of the electric power industry which he helped create. At his core, as the author shows, Edison's ability to do things was not necessarily transferable to others, including his children. The first batch of kids went kind of bad, and the group from marriage #2 turned out better because wife #2 was more strict and traditional than Edison.
Harvard Business Review recently had an article on great leaders, and pointed out that for every narcissistic leader, you need about 100 obsessive-compulsives scurrying around to make things really work. Each type needs the other to get anything done. This seems to have been the case with Edison, who in addition to being headstrong and creative, had the essential gifts described by Henry Ford as necessary to get anything done: also have "the soul of an Irish construction foreman and a Jewish broker." Or something like that.
