About the Author

Fabrizio Benedetti, Professor of Neurophysiology and Human Physiology, Department of Neuroscience, University of Turin Medical School, Italy

He received the Medical Doctor (MD) degree in 1981 from the University of Turin Medical School. In 1984, he received a Silbert International Award from the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA). In the 1980s and 1990s, he worked in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA and was a visiting professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Texas in Dallas. He has been Professor of Neurophysiology and Human Physiology at the University of Turin Medical School since 1999. He has been a member of the six-strong group on placebo of the Mind-Brain-Behavior Initiative at Harvard University, and a consultant for the Placebo Project at the US National Institute of Health. He has been nominated a member of the Academy of Europe and of the European Dana Alliance for the Brain. His current scientific interests are the placebo effect across diseases, pain in dementia, and intraoperative neurophysiology for mapping the human brain.

A book for medical researchers

Written by a premier expert, the book is an exhaustive treatment of the subject, in small type. An excellent book for anyone doing medical research. I personally found the book somewhat condescending in good western medical tradition. Statements such as: "The history of medicine is basically a history of placebos, as most medical interventions were nothing but placebos..." badly misjudge herbal medicine traditions worldwide. The scope of the book is very narrow and does not consider "mind control of the body" knowledge of other cultures. Nor does it recognize the considerable effect of hormesis on the subject.

Didn't feel like a WAAAAGHHH!!!!

Loved the prologue and epilogue, but that's about it. This book had a great intro, loved it, it was very different, took me by surprise and really opened up what the story had to offer. In the end however,it just didn't deliver. I hate to say it, but the whole story and characters were unimpressive and uneventful when comparing this story line as a tie in or extension to The War for Armageddon, including Helsreach. The plot of this book could pretty much be summarized by the title and the way this book was written became hard to read after a while, Since this is a Space Marine Battles, comparing this set up narrative with Rynn's World, for example, really left me lost. Each chapter was very long, each character not adding too much depth and complexity to the whole campaign. I love the way Rynn's World was set up by location, I thought that was fantastic, this book was set up by character, and the scenes just seemed too long and drawn out. This author mentioned 'decades' as long Space Marine service and 'hundreds' of orcs as a lot...where other books would have probably mentioned centuries and thousands of orcs.

This may have been better if the Space Marines were replaced with PDF or something other than Astartes, could have been more substantial. The Dark Angels showed no emotion, whenever a brother died, or when battling orcs, everything was very superficial. The Dark Angels are not really my favorite, and this book didn't help out, the one and only book I like with them in it is Eye of Terror, other than that, they've yet to stand out to me at all. Sorry Gav, this story lacked detail, twists, surprises and heart.

A refreshing addition to the Black Library

I have read much of the 40k material in reference to the Space Marines. From the Space Wolves to the Ultramarines you can always bet on there being praying, and death to those that oppose the Emperor's will. I as much as anyone, reads a Space Marine book for these very things. Where this book truly stands out is that it portrays how a Space Marine company fights as a unit. It displays how the elements of recon, medical, and assault truly work during the chaos of war. It gives you a clear idea of how a Commander of such an element must make decisions in order to prosecute a campaign of this level.

As I have said before I've read several of these novels, but this is the first one that attempts to move 40k from futuristic Sci Fi fantasy to strong military Sci Fi. Don't misunderstand if you read a Space Marines novel for the praying, and killing it is here. What it adds is the tactical aspect of how they fight, maneuver, and plan. The action is spot on and very grim, as it should be. Instead of portraying the Space Marines as unstoppable juggernauts on the battlefield it shows their thought process before, during, and after the battle. It even portrays elements of doubt that they experience. Outside of the Horus Heresy books this is rare within much of the 40k material.

I think that Mc Neill and Abnett our still probably the best authors of the Black Library. Thorpe does create a very real and grim portrayal of war from the Marines standpoint. I don't think it fair to compare what Thorpe has done here with either writer. The only comparison that comes to mind is Eric Nylund's Halo books. Which shows the tactics, techniques, and sacrifices' that even the most supreme warriors must make to prosecute a war. I highly recommend this book to any 40k fan it's just different enough to be refreshing but maintains what the Space Marines are about at their core. I would also recommend it to any Military Sci Fi fan as well. It takes what exist in the 40k universe and applies it to the military structure that exists now. Instead of one hero doing it all it shows a company of warriors doing what they can to contribute. Great book and I can't wait to see if Thorpe will write another book applying these ideas.

The Good: The Dark Angels are a very fascinating chapter of the Adeptus Astartes and it is quite nice to be able to see them march to war and move away from the persistent plot of hunting the fallen members of their brethren. It is important to give depth to any faction and/or characters in order to make it more than just a one-hat factor. This book always the audience to experience another facet of the Dark Angels, one where they are doing what Adeptus Astartes do best: Making battle and war.

Something that is really cool is the inclusion of the local army as characters. A favorite event in these books is when the Adeptus Astartes interact with ordinary humans. It serves two purposes: the first is that it illustrates the extent of the differences between the Astartes and the human forces. Astartes are so strong and the humans seem so frail. The second reason is that serves to show how similar they still are to ordinary humans. Astartes are not perfect and sometimes they forget that and they look down upon the multitudes of ordinary humans, but occasionally they are reminded of the courage of humanity and this book shows us that every now and then.

One of the best parts of the whole book is the beginning and the ending. Without giving too much away, it is here that we see the face of the enemy, Ghazghkull Thraka himself. Normally, prologues and epilogues are a hit and miss. Either they are useful towards the plot or they are a waste of time. Some authors advise to cut those parts out during editing. Anyway, we see the extent of Ghazghkull’s abilities compared to lesser Ork and for those who are unfamiliar, we see why he is one of the greatest foes ever faced by the Imperium of Man.

It makes Bookworm eager to read more about him.

The Flaws: This one was a bit of dud compared to classics of the Space Marine Battles series such as Rynn’s World or Death of Integrity. It is hard for Bookworm to pin down the exact factor that led to his lack of appreciation. There are several things to take into account…

The Dark Angels themselves lends to the book’s flaws. This chapter is known for its dour character and that does not lead to an interesting story. Character is half the battle when writing any work of fiction and the Dark Angels lack a lot of it. The only at times to differentiate one Space Marine from the other was by their name and rank and nothing else. There are one or two tender moments but they are overshadowed by the rest of the story, which is lacking or simply lost among all the generic action scenes.

Orks are a favorite enemy of Bookworm but they felt underutilized in this volume. After reading several books that feature Ork onslaughts known as a WAAAGH!, the Orks in this book did not feel like part of a WAAAGH! Ork onslaughts are supposed overwhelming things, like tidal waves of violence sweeping over the land and whatever defenders were there. Mountains of crude machines to be rendered into scraps and fire by bolt shell and las fire. The orks are more a like a storm than an army. In this book, the orks were an army and it felt…lacking compared to the all but unstoppable forces of other tales of the Black Library.

The ultimate problem is that the whole volume is too formulaic. The Space Marines are just that: Space Marines (tm) and nothing else, no certain quirk of their biology like the Blood Angels or the Space Wolves. No memorable characters to spice up the squads and only fleeting moments that prove they are still human. They are simply generic Adeptus Astartes and they lack significant character development. They fight the orks, alongside the local planetary defense force and the orks put up a good fight but nothing exceeding what most of the Dark Angels can handle. There is small twist about the orks near the end that serves as a climax for a preceding mystery about them but even then it lacks gravity.

Even the trademark illustration in the center of the book is lacking. Very generic and quite probably from some older codex (game manual).

Final Verdict: If you are a fan of the sons of the Lion, this book is worth checking out but don’t get your hopes up for something extraordinary.

He skillfully interrelates the problem of slavery with international politics, with Cuban conservative and liberal movements, and with political and economic developments in Spain itself.

Arthur Corwin finds that the study of this problem falls naturally into two phases, the first of which, 1817–1860, traces the gradual reduction of the African traffic to the Spanish Antilles and constitutes, in effect, a study in Anglo-Spanish diplomacy. He gives special attention here to the aggressive nature of British abolitionist diplomacy and the mounting but generally ineffective indignation resulting from Spanish failure to apply sanctions against the traffic, as well as the increasing North American interest in the annexation of Cuba. The first phase has for its principal theme the manner in which for decades Spain feigned compliance with agreements to end the slave trade while actually protecting slaveholding interests as the best means of holding Cuba.

The American Civil War, which destroyed the greatest bulwark of black slavery in the New World, marked the opening of a new phase, 1860–1886. The author strongly emphasizes here such influences as the rise of the Creole reform movement in Cuba and Puerto Rico, which, reading the signs of the times, gave the initial impulse to a Spanish abolitionist movement and contributed to closing the Cuban slave trade in 1866; the liberal revolution of 1868 in Spain and its promise of colonial reforms; the outbreak of the great Creole rebellion in Cuba, 1868–1878, and the abolitionist promises of the rebel chieftains; the threat of American intervention and the abolitionist pressure of American diplomacy; and the protests of the Spanish reactionaries in Spain and Cuba, leading to further procrastination in Madrid. The second phase has as its principal theme the shaping, through all these intertwined factors, of Spain’s first measure of gradual emancipation, the Moret Law of 1870, and all subsequent steps toward abolition.

Kamal I.M. Al-Malah, Ph.D., is head of the department of chemical engineering at the University of Ha’il in Saudi Arabia. He holds B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in chemical/biochemical engineering. Dr. Al-Malah graduated from Oregon State University in 1993, and his area of specialty during his M.S. and Ph.D. programs dealt with protein interactions and behavior at interfaces in biological systems. He currently researches in the realm of chemical and biochemical engineering and food engineering. Additionally, Dr. Al-Malah is a software developer and has created Windows-based software for engineering applications and modeling of physical/biophysical systems.

The Best Textbook for Product Design!

This book demystifies design and the product development with practical examples of how others have been successful in every phase and activity of the process. Clear, easy to read, well illustrated. Strongest on the engineering and manufacturing perspective, but Ulrich is also sensitive to aesthetics, marketing and consumer experience issues (a rare find!).
After 20 years consulting in the field, I still found lots to learn here. I'd call it a major contribution to the field.

Ulrich and Eppinger have done a great job of presenting a usable framework with a functional set of tools for product development. Their book is easy to read, easy to apply, yet very powerful for aiding the product development process. I refer to it often in my own work. The many examples from a variety of industries provide a richness not present in many other works in this field. Read it before your next project meeting.

Great product development handbook!

This book provides a great hands-on approach to product development. Unlike other product development books that dwell too much on the philosophical aspects of product development, this book gives you practical advice on how to define meaningful product specifications to meet your customer needs and develop successful products. The book provides a very nice concept development process that I've found very useful.
This book is mainly focused on product development processes and does not provide much information on technology development. In addition, the book lacks depth in the strategic aspects of product development(such as market segmentation, strategic management of technology).
If you are looking for a very useful and powerful handbook for product development, this is the book you are looking for. However, if you are interested in the strategic aspects of product development, you may need other references.

� � �The ideas presented in Blood and Seed are an academic suggestion of why the Hebrew text reads as it does (and it does not read word for word as represented in English) and how that possibly explains the ongoing problem of evil within man, even after "religious experience." Blood and Seed is not, however, a dogmatic statement of any doctrine or theology. �My desire is that it provokes the reader to the realization that there is much more to and within the Scriptures in their original language and context than tradition has made available to us.� � �Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Fortunately, there is a difference between researched academic opinion and simple emotional response to unfamiliar and challenging ideas. To make such a statement as one reviewer below: "he truly pushed past credible research into pure fantasy" without qualifying it with supported, researched examples is academically and socially unacceptable. For this topic, however, one must have some capability with ancient languages and familiarity with ancient idioms, cultures, etc. This is why I included so much information about the languages, footnoted all references and included all sources; so that anyone could research all of it for themselves. Nevertheless, without committing the time and resources to become capable with these languages and do this research, one really cannot engage in serious debate about the information herein. My desire is that it provokes the reader to the realization that there is much more to and within the Scriptures in their original language and context than tradition has made available to us.

About the Author
Brian Wright is a biblical scholar and teacher, focusing on the Hebrew language, culture, and history that birthed Judaism and Christianity. He is the executive director of Calvert Biblical Institute (formerly American Biblical Institute) and holds a Master of Religious Education in Middle Eastern Studies from The American Institute of Holy Land Studies.� He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Religion & Society at Oxford Graduate School, and intends further graduate and doctoral study in Biblical Interpretation and Semitic Languages.� His is the author of �The Great Yet Completely Misunderstood Commission of Jesus, released in 2011 and�Blood & Seed,�released in October of 2010, which will be followed by a sequel, The GodBlood, due late in 2014, and the third in the series, Ichabod: The Glory Has Departed, due in 2015.

Wow! Never looked at it that way.

We've all heard the apple tree story, but I have to admit I've never really read everything the Bible says about it. When you actually read everything the Bible says about Adam, Eve, the Tree and all that, it begins to point in a different direction that what we learned in Sunday school. This guy has really done his homework. He breaks it down into the oldest languages, showing word and even individual letter meanings. The other really interesting thing is how much tons of other scholars, theologians, and rabbis have written about things not being what they seem over the centuries, but its just not widely known or taught in our congregations. The author lists pages and pages of these sources so you can go research for yourself. Read this book and begin to see that all is not as it appears!

"Blood and Seed" will definitely challenge the reader to think outside the traditional story-line that has been taught to Christian generations for the past 500+ years.

This author's extensive research of the Hebrew texts and commentaries...together with his spiritual insights...have pushed the story of A'dam and Chavah beyond the the mere eating of an apple.

This is one book that we all must read in order to expose our naivte' of mankind's deviant inclinations...yet while assuring us that through our faith in the G-D of Abraham, Isaaic and Jacob and the atoning blood of the Messiah, Yeshua(Jesus), we are delivered from the penalty of our tainted past which began in the Garden of Eden.

Provocative and uncomfortably refreshing.

could have been longer-but darn good

ron mosely"s foreward should be changed to"this book should be read by every open minded person-period, not just scholars. i"ve held to most of the assertions voiced in this book for over 20+ years and have almost every source quoted in the book in my library. i"ve been wanting to write a book like this for the same amount of time but unfortunately i have to work for a living and don"t have the time to write-just study and read. In addition,this type of book and subject won"t be accepted by the religious establishment because just as in the book of enoch"s expansion on genesis 6, most people can"t fathom what actually happened.my friends and my wife mostly agree with the author, and believe other sources like jubilees, book of enoch should have been in canon along with others,but people want to believe their sons of seth theory and garden snake etc. etc. dogma. I"m so glad the author had a lot of michael heiser"s material-i have all his material although he does not hold to the 2 father belief,his work is better than almost every scholar and plenty of pseudo hebrew roots-messianic scholars out there who call themselves scholars with diploma mill basement colleges-i could name a bunch who change their names to jewish names to sound more "educated" or informed because they think unless you are jewish, you can"t possibly understand- and most of them can"t read,write or speak hebrew or aramaic except what they are learning on the fly. Well i guess so many do not want to be in the same room with a scholar with a REAL degree in hebrew,aramaic,semitic studies,etc.check his web site-it"s a treasure.Mike has also called out a few scholars and Dr"s for debates but they don"t want to be exposed because the hebrew roots money train may end if they are exposed. But back to the book-it"s a gem,and as stated above, should be read by all. This book is an in depth study on the genesis garden incident - and the author covers the hebrew, paleo hebrew,greek,aramaic, and other languages to bring out what i believe is the true meaning. i just wish it was longer. After reading this book for the third time-yes, its that good-i realized how brilliant this authors presentation is and can appreciate the detective work of bringing all the noted sources together and line them up with the passages in genesis,yes it all lines up with scripture, new and old testament which the author quotes using the brilliance of a sherlock holmes case. I doubt the author will sell a lot of books because most people won"t believe the possible conclusions,but i wish this book was a best seller because of the possible future ramifications down the road-the belief that some of these beings that were in the garden are due to return to earth in the very near future. As erik von daniken stated on the history channel"s excellent ancient aliens series,the people are going to be in for "the shock of the gods".To people who scoff their is not enough evidence for a lillith,samael presence in the garden-get this book. As stated,the author"s references are worth the price alone-i have most of them.Charts,drawings,pictures and maps are generously included to connect thoughts in prior generations. And the dots that are connected in old and new testament passages that most people have mused over are brought out in plain view-its just that nobody has EVER brought out the connections,verses,and references with sources so well before.I guess scholars with real degrees at real universities that really know the languages hold themselves up to putting out a well written and referenced product and this author can take a bow- he has accomplished a masterpiece of detective work. People-get this book to your library-you may not agree with everything-who does nowadays-but i believe 90%++ is spot on. I can"t wait till the author"s next book-the godblood-hurry it up!

Practical, insightful and clear

This book was refreshingly easy to read and understand. It was well thought out and presented. The 7 strategies allow for one to create their own actionable pathway with relative ease. It fills in the black hole that many of us, including myself often find ourselves lost in, the hole between where we are and where we want to be. The author does a fantastic job of shedding light on how to get from the start to the finish without losing your way while on the journey. He is however, careful to point out that the path is not, nor will ever be easy and set backs are inevitable but it is those who are able to keep forging forward and maintaining persistence will ultimately prevail.

In reviewing the authors bio on the cover the author has a very impressive career trajectory of his own, so it would appear that the author speaks from experience and has taken his own advise by following the 7 strategies.

This book is a winner, even if you feel you may have reached your career goals you will still be able to pick up some useful tips by reading this book.

Excellent and strong guide to career planning. Understands both the theory and practice and speaks in a language that is useable to any industry or practice. I've seen similar approaches, but this one is how to manage career development in the current millennium. Strong book and good read.

Get Where You Want to Be

I think we all subscribe to the belief if we only had a proven map – a clearly outlined path, we would be able to achieve anything we wanted in life. This is one of the reasons the self-help industry is so huge. Unfortunately, our desire for quick solutions gets in our way. Our propensity to seek the easy way out takes us away from the proven path.

David Van Rooy, author of Trajectory has provided a proven path for anyone to achieve success in business and life. It is not necessarily glamorous or exciting, but if followed it will work. The subtitle tells you what the book is all about – 7 Career Strategies to Take You From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be.

First, Mr. Van Rooy discusses The Concept of Trajectory – “It is incremental progress that serves as the impetus for even faster progress.” Said differently, we find our core skills and build on those. Success is not about jumping to the top – it is about taking small but consistent action that will always be moving us toward our goals.

The seven strategies are presented as seven lessons, one per chapter. The Lessons are: The Power of Feedback; Persistence as a Differentiator; Think Big, Act Small, Move Quick; Breaking Through Plateaus; Avoiding the Stagnation Trap; Achieving Growth from Failure and Sustaining Outlier Performance.

All the lessons are valuable and contribute to the success of one’s trajectory. But some of the lessons are more powerful or impactful than others. I really like Mr. Van Rooy’s discussion of the psychology of persistence. He points out that research has explored and developed a formula the predicts successful performance – Ability X Persistence = Performance. If you have high ability, you don’t need as much persistence. But the lack of ability can be made up for in added persistence. “Coupling your ability with persistence will provide you with an ongoing differentiator in life.”

The other lesson which I found outstanding was Think Big, Act Small, Move Quick. The author says, “In this lesson, you will learn that you must think long-term, but the best path to reach your big goals is often through small actions and quick moves.” The move quick part of the lesson helps one to avoid over-thinking decisions which can lead to poor outcomes. He stresses the idea that small incremental steps can serve as a stepping stone for extraordinary breakthroughs.

The book is full of very insightful teachings that will help anyone achieve a high level of success if they will simply implement them. At the end of each chapter is an exercise designed to help the reader implement the lesson and deepen the understanding.
