What Is Paleolithic Art?: Cave Paintings and the Dawn of Human Creativity, by Jean Clottes

Was it a trick of the light that drew our Stone Age ancestors into caves to paint in charcoal and red hematite, to watch the heads of lions, likenesses of bison, horses, and aurochs in the reliefs of the walls, as they flickered by firelight? Or was it something deeper—a creative impulse, a spiritual dawn, a shamanistic conception of the world efflorescing in the dark, dank spaces beneath the surface of the earth where the spirits were literally at hand?

In this book, Jean Clottes, one of the most renowned figures in the study of cave paintings, pursues an answer to this “why” of Paleolithic art. While other books focus on particular sites and surveys, Clottes’s work is a contemplative journey across the world, a personal reflection on how we have viewed these paintings in the past, what we learn from looking at them across geographies, and what these paintings may have meant—what function they may have served—for their artists. Steeped in Clottes’s shamanistic theories of cave painting, What Is Paleolithic Art? travels from well-known Ice Age sites like Chauvet, Altamira, and Lascaux to visits with contemporary aboriginal artists, evoking a continuum between the cave paintings of our prehistoric past and the living rock art of today. Clottes’s work lifts us from the darkness of our Paleolithic origins to reveal, by firelight, how we think, why we create, why we believe, and who we are.

Review
“Subtle, imaginative, and brilliantly accomplished, the images of animals and humans found in caves and dated from the end of the last Ice Age, between 40,000 and 10,000 years ago, continue to astonish us. The emotions and motives that inspired them beg to be understood. In What is Paleolithic Art?, Clottes, the renowned cave- and rock-art specialist, suggests some answers. . . . This is a thought-provoking book about complex societies that endeavored to understand the world in their own various ways. For anyone interested in Ice Age art, Clottes’s enthusiasm cannot fail to energize, inspire, and provide caution to their own investigations.” (Jill Cook, British Museum Nature)

“What gives this art its power, Clottes says, is that it makes us dream.” (New York Times)

“It is shamanism that, according to Clottes, is the key to understanding the Paleolithic practices of what he calls Homo spiritualis, who chose to descend into the underworld, seek a trance state, and enter into contact with spirits.” (Le Monde, on the French edition)

“Clottes has been looking at and thinking about the cave paintings of ice age Europe for almost half a century. I can’t imagine anyone has a greater knowledge about the paintings, carvings, sculptures, and their associated archaeology than this great prehistorian. It’s not just greater knowledge, but an emotional response: I’ve seen tears come into his eyes as he was describing a painting that he must have seen and talked about many times before, and that still tugged at his heart as much as his brain. Clottes’s enormous depth of learning and affection emanate from every page of this book.” (Steven Mithen, University of Reading New Scientist)

“Clottes explores why prehistoric people took to cave painting and speculates on what the art means.” (Jeremy Mikula Chicago Tribune, Printers Row)

“The deep understanding, love, and empathy that Clottes has for the art, imagination, and spiritual world of our Ice Age ancestors is so great that this book is a must-read.” (Lawrence Guy Strauss, University of New Mexico Journal of Anthropological Research, on the French edition)

“Clottes is the leading Paleolithic archaeologist and perhaps the most famous archaeologist in the world. This alone makes What Is Paleolithic Art? noteworthy. But the topic is also one that generates interest beyond the archaeological profession, especially inasmuch as his expansive discussion emphasizes shamanism as the likely origin for this art, and partly bases this conclusion on comparisons and analogies with ethnographic cases. . . . Very readable and appealing.” (David S. Whitley, author of "Cave Paintings and the Human Spirit: The Origin of Creativity and Belief")

“Clottes has probably seen more rock art around the world than anyone else, and this gives him an unusually broad perspective on the questions raised by the prehistoric cave art of his native France. Not everyone agrees with the shamanistic interpretations toward which he leans, but this very accessible discussion of both French cave art specifically and of rock art in general is wide-ranging, and his is certainly a point of view which anyone interested in Paleolithic art should know about.” (Ian Tattersall, author of "The Strange Case of the Rickety Cossack and Other Cautionary Tales from Human Evolution")

Martin is curator emeritus in the Integrative Research Center at the Field Museum, Chicago.

A Conversation with Fear, by Mermer Blakeslee

"We all pack different ideas and feelings into the word fear: fear of the unknown, fear of failure, of losing control, of aging, of falling down, fear of the body reacting and fear of the body not reacting, even the fear of saying the word fear. This book does not attempt to define fear or explain why a frightened person experiences certain physiological responses. It doesn't separate students into categories or classify symptoms. What this book does attempt is to offer you both audacity and comfort. Although comfort feels quiet, it arrives through a bold move: accepting the presence of fear. To do this, we must pick our way between two powerful tendencies, to control and to cure, the Scylla and Charybdis of our culture. These tendencies show themselves constantly in words like manage, handle, overcome, conquer, dispel, banish, fix... By regarding fear as a pathology to control or cure, we assume that life without its presence is possible, normal, or even desirable. But once we accept fear as a habitual acquaintance in an imaginative, meaningful life, we can begin to cultivate a conversation with it rather than engage it in a fight." A Conversation with Mermer

"A Conversation with Fear" is, simply put, a fabulous read and a deeply insightful inquiry into fear -- its causes and remedies. Blakeslee observes that she uses "skiing as a metaphor" so as "to clarify our intricate relationship with fear and invite into our lives the power of surrender." As a skier (near finishing his seventh decade of life), I obviously felt at home with the metaphor, as will any skier. The first question, of course, is whether or not a non-skier would find Blakeslee a kindred spirit as well. And the answer is "that depends."

Consider, as Blakeslee does, that we live in a culture where the dominant paradigm is built on control, of the self and of the other (be this nature, animals, or our conspecifics). And when we feel our control slipping or, worse, when we feel that we've lost control, fear wells up as a powerful, sometimes paralyzing force. A person who has experienced fear, in this sense, will likely find "a conversation with fear" a liberating read -- that is, "freeing from the paralyzing force of fear."

A skier (or for that matter anyone at home in the natural world --"lions and tiges and bears, oh my!"), who has placed himself or herself in "harm's way" on a snow-covered mountain, almost surely knows the feeling. And the remedy for fear, you ask? There is, as Blakeslee suggests, no simple remedy to the pyschological complexity of fear.

But there is a way, a path if you will, that has many markers to guide us past fear. Indeed, she argues that, however fearful, each of us has a guide who, if we listen, can move us along the path into a space, a clearing where fear has disappeared, dissolved into the kind of embrace a skier feels on a perfect powder day when body, skis, and mountain have become an effortless synergy.

I realize that the notion of an effortless synergy sounds "new agish," almost mystical in the sense of Atman is Brahman and so on. And yet if we think of skiing as a metaphor which helps us grasp the reality of fear, we see that Blakeslee is on solid ground. Metaphors are by design intended to aid us in comprehending a subject that is poorly understood (fear, in this case) by conceptually bridging across the unknown in terms of a known (skiing, in this case).

A powder skier knows that to fear the powder is to be paralyzed, where struggle is soon followed by exhaustion. Powder is not to be controlled. Rather the skier gives him or herself over to it -- the synergy, free of fear.

In the final analysis, then, perhaps Blakeslee finely woven narrative is more readily accessible to a skier. But surely the book offers handholds for the nonskier who knows fear as well.

I owe Mermer Blakeslee a beer or ten
By A. Harrison
I was really struggling with doing anything more extreme than a bunnyish green slope before I read this book, and had been for months. The techniques in this book completely changed how I tried new ski runs, and now (combined with a couple of lessons for technique) I'm skiing easy to mid-range blues.

This book isn't a substitute for lessons by any means - Mermer Blakeslee doesn't really talk about ski technique much at all. What she does cover is how to get the troll who's whispering on your shoulder to go away, and how to manageably widen your comfort zone. That controlled push of the comfort zone, combined with returning to what you're comfortable with, is a huge confidence builder and gives us permission to take smaller successful steps instead of trying big jumps and failing.

The only downside I would note with this book is that Ms. Blakeslee seems to be disdainful of organized religion. I'm sure she just feels like she's providing examples, but there are only so many times I can read about Catholic guilt and how mistakes make her feel like she's intrinsically a bad person before it's evident that Ms. Blakeslee has some religious issues. I found it offputting enough that I probably would never take one of her classes in person, but I can skim over it in the book, and it's still an excellent and instructive read. I'd knock half a star off for this if Amazon allowed it.

Fun Way to Expand Your Vocabulary
By Laura De Giorgio
This sets contains 5 CDs, each one goes over about 50 words. Good number of the words on these recordings seem to be on a high-school level, though.

The first CD covers the vocabulary related to: All or Nothing; I love you ... I hate you; The Naughty and the Nice.

The second CD coverts the vocabulary related to: The Long and the Short of It; The Mighty and the Meak; You Help Me, Then You Hurt Me.

The third CD covers the vocabulary related to: True or False; From the Sublime to the Ridiculous; Something Old, Something New.

The fourth CD covers the vocabulary related to: Alone or Together; Now You See It, Now you Don't; The More Things Change, The More They Stay the Same.

The fifth CD covers the vocabulary related to: Park and Ride; Shadows and Light.

The recordings are very entertaining to listen to. After defining the words, they are dramatized, often in a humorous way, adding fun to the learning process.

Seems to work for me
By a.y.ko
I'm studying for the GRE's and taking the Princeton Review class in conjunction to listening to the CD. These disks contain several words that are also in the Hit Parade lists that we get from class. Hearing the words, meanings, and sentences using the words really help to learn them. They group the words based in similarity in meanings to help you learn. First, they give you the words, meanings, and use them in sentences. Then they follow by a story using the words. Then they say the words, with a pause so you can think about the definition, and then give you the definition and use the word in a sentence. I've definitely been using the new vocabulary more and more in my everyday speech. I wish Princeton Review would do something like this for ALL of the words from the Hit Parade and Beyond the Hit Parade lists. The only other really effective way I've found to really learn the words is to do a google search of each word, and just see how they're used in context.

From Publishers Weekly
Novelist Steven Pressfield (The Legend of Bagger Vance; Gates of Fire) goes self-help in The War of Art: Winning the Inner Creative Battle. Dubbing itself a cross between Sun-Tzu's The Art of War and Julie Cameron's The Artist's Way, Pressfield's book aims to help readers "overcome Resistance" so that they may achieve "the unlived life within." Whether one wishes to embark on a diet, a program of spiritual advancement or an entrepreneurial venture, it's most often resistance that blocks the way. To kick resistance, Pressfield stresses loving what one does, having patience and acting in the face of fear.

From Library Journal
Drawing on his many years' experience as a writer, Pressfield (The Legend of Bagger Vance) presents his first nonfiction work, which aims to inspire other writers, artists, musicians, or anyone else attempting to channel his or her creative energies. The focus is on combating resistance and living the destiny that Pressfield believes is gifted to each person by an all-powerful deity. While certainly of great value to frustrated writers struggling with writer's block, Pressfield's highly personal philosophy, soundly rooted in his own significant life challenges, has merit for anyone frustrated in fulfilling his or her life purpose. Successful photographer Ulrich (photography chair, Art Inst. of Boston; coeditor, The Visualization Manual) explores the creative impulse and presents an approach to developing creativity that, like Pressfield's, will be relevant to artists and others. He identifies and explains seven distinct stages of the creative process: discovery and encounter, passion and commitment, crisis and creative frustration, retreat and withdrawal, epiphany and insight, discipline and completion, and responsibility and release. He also develops his view of the three principles of the creative impulse, which include creative courage, being in the right place at the right time, and deepening connections with others. Rooted in Eastern philosophy, Ulrich's fully developed treatise nicely updates the solid works of Brewster Ghiselin (The Creative Process), Rollo May (The Courage To Create), and Julia Cameron (The Artist's Way). It also supplements Pressfield's inspirational thoughts on overcoming resistance through introspective questions and practical exercises that further elaborate the creative process. Both books are recommended for public libraries needing additional works on creativity. Dale Farris, Groves, TX

The first time in 109 reviews that I have ever said, "you Must read this book"!
By Brian Johnson
[[VIDEOID:98df8a3aa5c3ebd9a6a312b6b3c0afae]] "Kabbalists believe that above every blade of grass is an angel crying "Grow! Grow!" I'll go further. I believe that above the entire human race is one superangel, crying "Evolve! Evolve!""

"The amateur believes he must first overcome his fear, then he can do his work. The professional knows that fear can never be overcome. He knows there's no such thing as a fearless warrior or a dread-free artist. What Henry Fonda does, after puking into the toilet in his dressing room, is to clean up and march out onstage. He's still terrified but he forces himself forward in spite of his terror. He knows that once he gets out into the action, his fear will recede and he'll be okay."

~ Steven Pressfield from The War of Art

This is the 109th review I've created. Up to this point, I've made a lot of strong recommendations on books I think you'd love but I've never said you *must* read a particular book.

I'm gonna break that streak here.

If you're a creative person, you need to read this book. It's that good. And, when I say "creative person" I mean anyone who's committed to creating an authentically awesome life. (And, given the fact that you're reading this, my hunch is that clearly means YOU!)

I'm not sure how many times I've read The War of Art over the years but it's a lot. Each time I pick it up I get a swift kick in the creative butt and my life takes a significant step forward.

As the author of The Legend of Bagger Vance and a number of great best-selling novels (my favorite beyond Bagger Vance is Gates of Fire--an incredible portrayal of the classic Spartan warriors), Steven Pressfield knows what it's like to create. He has an extraordinary way of capturing the challenges we face in the War of Art--along with the means by which we can overcome those obstacles (or, as he calls it "Resistance"). Powerful stuff.

Here's just a few of the Big Ideas:

1. Throwing Up - It happens.
2. Work & Its By-Products - Let results take care of themselves.
3. True Love - The amateur vs. the professional.
4. It's 9 O'Clock - Time for inspiration to strike.
5. Time to Turn Pro - A checklist.

this book will help you if you have an open mind
By Brian505
This book may not be for everyone, because not everyone will recieve the message, but it is intended for everyone, in that creativity lies in every human in some form. A lot of reviewers complain about the short chapters, the seeming lack of content, the casual flippancy Pressfield occasionally invokes when discussing the image of Hitler as a repressed, blocked artist, the third part of the book that deals with higher dimensions and serving a higher purpose. etc. No, this book may not be for everynyone. But if you are a blocked creative with an open heart and an eager mind or someone seeking to launch any kind of humanistic endeavor or starting a business, etc, you should consider giving it a try.

This is an unorthodox book. You'll finish it in a day or two. It's filled with words like "Resistance" that sound like self-help buzzwords. It isn't. It's a very apt and all-encompassing term for the forces that keep you from doing your life's work, whatever that may be. Distraction, apathy, booze, procrastination, excuses, toxic relationships, depression, and my favorite of Pressfield's: "compulsive screwing up", just to name a few. Anyone honest with himself who has ever claimed to have "writer's block" knows it's a cop-out, an excuse for not sitting down at an empty screen/page, and doing the work.

This book will kick you in the ass and show you how you've been self-sabotaging yourself. It will also fire you up and give you the strength you need to press on and do the work. Pressfield is a kindly drill-sergeant; he holds no punches but you get the feeling that he really wants you to succeed.

As I read the opening chapter on resistance I saw my guilty self on each page. Illusions were shattered. but it inspired me to sit down at the blank screen and do it. You'll read it once and then refer to it again and again as you might work with a coach on your golf swing.

It's a blue-print, not a map, and everyone's experience will be slightly different as they work through their own demons creating their blocks, so don't expect this to solve your problems. It's up to you to kill your own Minotaur. YOU have to do the work. Identifying the things in life that hold you back, the negative thought patterns, perfectionism, etc., is only the beginning.

The third part of the book, the part that addresses that thorny issue of where ideas and inspiration comes from, will be where many will fall by the wayside. Pressfield cautions you not to hold on too tightly to that precious gemstone you call your "talent", and open yourself to other possibilites, that there may be a higher dimensional energy at work here and that we, the artists, writers, dancers, whatever, are only the agents that this energy works through. Call it what you want. god, the universe, the tao, whatever. I think it was jazz great Charlie Parker that said when asked where his ideas come from, "I just try to get out of the way". He meant that he suspended all ego and allowed the work to flow through him from a higher plane. not comfortable with all this higher-dimensional nonsense? Maybe it's not for you.

But The War of Art will help you. It's helping me. Try his other one, Do The Work as well; some of it is redundant, but is still very worth it. you have nothing to lose, only your blocks, so open your mind and try it.

Had Tears In My Eyes By The Time I Was Finished
By Harry Ramsay
This is an absolutely amazing book on self-discipline and creativity.

If you're an entrepreneur, an artist, a writer, scientist or just about anybody with an internal urge to CREATE something but cannot because of distractions, fears, doubts and apprehensions, then this is the book for you.

This will book show and define the #1 thing that's stopping you from bringing out your creative potential. It's called Resistance and how it behaves and how it beats you.

And then it stresses why we should overcome the resistance and how to overcome it successfully by detaching ourselves from the fruits, operating from a territorial perspective (i.e. Doing work for the sake of doing work).

By the time I reached the small chapter on Gita and Krishna's explanation on doing work for work's sake, I literally had tears in my eyes.

... Because that's the way an artist must operate, not caring for the fruits.

And I can attest my success in my business & job for JUST that. I gave up all hopes, desires & doubts I had.

I didn't care. I just decided to do the work, punched in my time and 3 years later, I'm at a level that's shocking for many (but something I dreamed about).

However, I still have a lot of blocks where I didn't express myself and get the creative part of me and I'm fortunate to have come across this book.

Anyone who is here to CREATE something - read it. It will change your life!

Excellent!!
By FrantzM
More than a primer. Almost a memento even for the seasoned pro. A must for anyone using, venturing or even contemplating an IP-based Surveillance system that would include even Access Control.
A must have, only wish it was updated to account for advances in Networking with 10 G Ethernet becoming commonplace in 2014... With 40 G at the corner. Else an excellent book.

highly recommended!
