Judge Rabbit, a Cambodian folk hero, stars in this unique bilingual (English/Khmer) tale. When a woman's husband is called for military service, the jealous spirit of a banyan tree takes his human form. Believing this "man" is her husband, the wife is justifiably confused when her actual husband returns. The human husband enlists the help of Judge Rabbit, who produces a small bottle and declares that "only the true husband can fit inside this bottle." The tree spirit quickly enters the container and husband and wife are reunited. The story's universal appeal will be evident to readers even as they cheer Judge Rabbit's clever adjudication. Incorporating native flora and fauna, the bold, primitive paintings, though occasionally static, are vibrant counterpoints to the facing English text and blend the Khmer narrative into their striking design. Ages 6-12.

Kindergarten-Grade 3-- Brer Rabbit has a clever Cambodian counterpart in Judge Rabbit, a wise yet often mischievous hare who deals directly with people, solving their problems, and sometimes playing tricks on them. In this particular folktale, told in English and Khmer, a young husband must leave his new wife at the king's request to fight enemy invaders. Pausing in his march to war to rest under a banyan tree, he turns back three times, but finally chooses duty over love. Now within that tree dwells a spirit, who decides to see just what the man has left behind. Discovering a beautiful but sad wife, he decides to make her--and himself--happy by changing shape to look exactly like her husband. All goes well until the woman's husband returns. Who is the real husband? Shrewd Judge Rabbit comes up with the solution, which sees the grateful couple reunited and the tree spirit succumbing to his own vanity. Stylized floral borders enclose the English text on the left; vibrant primitive-style pictures, with flora and fauna fanciful yet realistic, appear with the much smaller Khmer text on the right. The illustrations, done in silkscreen, watercolor, and colored pencil, capture the feel of Cambodian life and leave the impression of elaborate Southeast Asian stitchery. However, the human figures and the tree spirit are sometimes awkwardly rendered, and it is unfortunate the blocks of Khmer text had to be placed within the illustrations. The story itself is neither as appealing a tale nor as lively a retelling as the Judge Rabbit folktale found in UNESCO's Folk Tales from Asia for Children Everywhere, Book 4 (Weatherhill, 1976; o.p.), but certainly larger folklore collections and libraries serving a Cambodian population will want it. --Diane S. A young couple's peace is destroyed when the husband is commanded to join the king's defense of their country. Overhearing his sorrow, a tree spirit decides to impersonate the young man and comfort his wife. All goes well until, months later, the husband comes home and the wife finds it impossible to tell which man is her true husband. At first, the rabbit judge decrees that--since the two are indistinguishable--all three must live together. Later, he comes up with a trickier solution: only the real husband will be able to fit in a little bottle, he mendaciously alleges; the spirit quickly complies and is caught. A note explains that Judge Rabbit stories provide a role model for Cambodian children: the good judge is self-confident and intelligent, yet also gentle and kind. Children may be unaware of the implicit message, but they'll enjoy the unusual story--especially its satisfying conclusion. A plus: the Khmer text is included, nicely integrated into the bright, strongly decorative illustrations. delightful introduction to Cambodian folk tales

This is a delightful introduction to the many Cambodian folk tales that feature Judge Rabbit, the "trickster" Judge who is always on the side of the righteous and wise.

The story involves a Tree Spirit who becomes jealous of the happy life of a young couple, and poses as the absent husband while he has been called to defend his country by his King. When the husband returns from war, the young bride is confused as to the identity of her true husband, while Tree Spirit maintains the ruse. That is, until Judge Rabbit enters the picture and tricks the Tree Spirit into revealing himself, and captures him to keep him from harming our couple's happiness forever more.

I found the illustrations a bit oddly colored, but my children (Khmer-Ham and European) did not mind.

This is one of the few books available in English and Khmer (Cambodian) with clean Pali script that is easy to read. My wife reads the Khmer to the children, and I read the English, so for our family this works very well.

The binding is high quality and will last for a long time even with rough handling from many hands.

Nice book!

Great children's book, I can't read Cambodian but my wife does to our daughter. My wife said the writing is in the equivalent of cursive in Cambodian and is difficult to read for many that live in the US. Nice pictures as well. Nice to have something for my daughter to recognize her heritage by.

Very cute story, but the Khmer print is too small for my MIL to easily read the book to my son. The illustrations are cute, though, and the English is very easy to read.

A real treat, well done

David Todd pulls off the difficult task of getting people to talk about themselves and their work while not getting in the way. It's great to read interviews with the likes of modern guitar explorers including Richard Thompson, Bob Mould, Tom Verlaine, and my favorite, Keith Levene.

Some of the discussion focus on the playing, others on events and circumstances, but all are interesting. Todd steers the discussions well.

There's not a whole lot of gear-head nuts-and-bolts details; what you get is insight into how some musical pioneers think about their craft.

Conversations with Guitar Antiheroes

This book is a must-read for guitarists and music lovers who feel alienated by the gear and technique fetish of most guitar-related publications. It's a series of thoughtful, extended interviews with a idiosyncratic guitars from the proto-punk (Lenny Kaye, Wayne Kramer), art-punk (Tom Verlaine!, Lee Ranaldo), no-wave, post-punk (Johnny Marr!), and sui generis (Richard Thompson!) traditions. If you are interested in strange, noisy, sometimes lovely guitar sounds made in deliberate opposition to the blues-rock guitar hero tradition, you will likely find something interesting in this book. It should be sufficient just to list a few more names, with exclamation points: Bob Mould! J. Mascis! Both Kim and Kelley Deal! Michio Kurihara! Michael Rother! I also learned about several musicians I've not heard but whose interviews make me curious enough to seek out. Very little in the way of gear or technique discussion, but Mr. Todd is a very well-informed interviewer, much like Simon Reynolds. Even if you're not a guitar obsessive, this goes well on a bookshelf next to Our Band Could Be Your Life and Reynolds' book of post-punk interviews. Wishful thinking, but I'd love to see a second volume (might I suggest Carrie Brownstein, Nels Cline, Johnny Greenwood?)

Blah, a guitarist book. It probably consists of the same people repeating the same stuff over again, and photos of them in macho poses....well, NOT THIS ONE. This is a set of interviews with 26 guitarists who are making their own rules; of both genders. Unique, insightful and deep.

Individuality would not seem to be a highly prized virtue at West Point. After all, new cadets arriving at the military academy are not required to pack anything more than a toothbrush and some underwear since they will be issued everything else. But despite their uniformity and disciplined bearing, the cadets profiled in David Lipsky's Absolutely American are still college kids who have moved away from their hometowns to figure out what to do with their lives. Lipsky was given unprecedented access at West Point and spent a full four years following a class from wide-eyed arrival through graduation. The most fascinating cadets are the ones who don't fit the gung-ho West Point stereotype. George Rash faces expulsion on a regular basis but persistently hangs in, "Huck" Finn just wants to play football but becomes more enamored of the military life than he ever expected, and Christi Cicerelle stays perfectly coiffed and, as she says, "girly," even while becoming a highly skilled soldier. Lipsky's tenure came at a pivotal time in the institution's history: hazing had recently been discontinued (part of a series of reforms referred to with both gravity and a little remorse as "The Changes") and the attacks of September 11, 2001 placed the United States in a war which the cadets would have to fight. The academy, in Lipsky's portrayal, demands much of its charges, its standards are high, and the possibility of being "separated" from West Point looms large for any cadet not up to par. In 1998, the commandants at West Point offered the author, a Rolling Stone reporter, unfettered access to their students. The result is a sunny portrait of a group of young men and women who, as one of them says, "don't quite fit in." Lipsky touches on some recent, controversial attempts at modernizing the academy—such as a ban on hazing and the promotion of "consideration of others" (which in the context of the Army could, in an "extreme instance," mean jumping on a grenade to save the lives of your fellow-soldiers)—but he is more effective as a chronicler of personality than of politics. A cadet defaces his uniform to protest softening standards; a bodybuilder worries that his future wife, following him from post to post, won't have a career; a football star fears life after graduation, wondering, "Can I think for myself?" Though initially ill-disposed toward the military, Lipsky eventually found that "of all the young people I'd met, the West Point cadets—although they are grand, epic complainers—were the happiest."

Rolling Stone journalist Lipsky, who specializes in portraying college students, turns to a certain college on the Hudson: West Point. He follows a graduating class through their first years as officers and an entering class from plebe to graduation. Among the notable graduates is Don Herzog, who initially wanted the infantry, tried aviation, and after the death of a friend chose finance. Perhaps the most appealing cadet is George Rash, neither infectious nor bold of personality, but who survived his name and physical limitations to graduate and go into the engineers. Others portrayed include the senior officers, and then Lipsky takes up the problems of maintaining West Point's unique culture--the military squared and cubed--in the face of a general culture that offers a host of temptations incompatible with its traditions; Lipsky treats issues of gender and sex (note the distinction) particularly skillfully, if more briefly than many may like. This Book is No Goat

David Lipsky, a writer for Rolling Stone magazine, and the son of self-proclaimed hippie parents whose zip code is in Greenwich Village is assigned to write about a class of cadets and write his story after a year. Nurtured with a distrust and dislike for anything military, he anticipates that West Point will throw up one roadblock after another. He is surprised when they give him unrestricted access the academy.

He sets about following one class that reports in July for "Beast Barracks" where new cadets or plebes are whipped into shape, must learn military courtesy and how to march. Lipsky must also develop an ear for the traditional jargon of West Point, some of which are many decades old. First, it is not West Point Military Academy, but the United States Military Academy at West Point, a promontory within academy borders. Freshmen are fourth classmen or more commonly known as plebes. Sophomores are third classmen and informally known as yearlings or yuks. Juniors are second classmen and are informally known as cows. The seniors are called first classmen, and are informally known as firsties.

The author starts out with a brief history of cadets fighting in past wars and fighting each other in the Civil War with the utmost lethality while maintaining the utmost civility for each other. Where the country could not stay together, the bond amongst cadets was inseparable in spite of uniforms of different color. I wish Lipsky had spent a little more time on this, which he managed to write with some humor.

He quickly attaches himself to a group of cadets called the corporation, the cadet who cannot pronounce the name of the game he plays (fooball), and a keen interest in a hapless, but likeable cadet named George Rash who is on the verge of being thrown out of West Point for lack of physical agility on several occasions. George skims just above the waves of academic and physical disaster. Other cadets mention his name "Raaaash" with emphasis, not as an act of unkindness. In George, they see their own worst fears as real and tangible.

The author asks for and receives permission to follow the class to graduation. You can tell that he is gaining respect for the men and women of West Point.

The most telling story for the author seemed to be his recounting of a lieutenant colonel (LTC) who takes responsibility for one of his captains who has an inappropriate anecdote on his computer. His computer being open, the cadets soon download the message, and pass it throughout the academy. The colonel tells his captain: "You're my subordinate. That means I'm responsible for your actions." The LTC, who has his enemies, stands up for his captain, takes the responsibility, and is forced out of the service. In retelling this account in New York restaurants and bars, the author's listeners do not understand why the colonel was punished, and not the captain. This is the telling point for the author, because in spite of his anti-military upbringing, he has learned enough about West Point to not only know the language, but to know how they think and even more, understand it. Lipsky makes his admiration quite clear for a man whom he sees as the embodiment of the academy motto: Duty, Honor, Country.

He follows the class through their romances, competitions, and obstacles. In the third year, the cadets are sworn in. Now they must serve in the army as enlisted men if they fail or drop out, and repay the army the cost of their education. In the fourth year, cadets request their branch. In the army, branches mean infantry, armor, artillery, aviation, quartermaster, etc.)

The author follows many of them through graduation, and into their first assignments. And George Rash? George finishes second from the last in his class. This is probably the worst spot because the lowest in the class, also known as the goat, which happens to be the mascot of Annapolis, collects the lottery which consists of $1.00 from every cadet in the brigade. Even in this George misses, but he didn't miss being posted to one of the army's least desirable places--Ft. Polk, LA.

This is an excellent narrative for one who wants to learn about modern day West Point, and the men and women who still attempt to live by a code of honor that seems almost archaic in our modern society.

Keep in mind, this is a story about West Point, not the army.

But still, GO ARMY! SINK navy!

Moving and Important

As someone originally from one of the small American towns that supplies West Point with candidates (Winterset, Iowa) but who now lives in the artistic community of Chicago, I read this book with personal and nationalistic interest. Most Americans get the news about the war and our military without knowing anyone who participates in them. Lacking that human information, we can too easily regard the armed forces as just that--forces without faces. This book supplies the faces, names and stories behind Rumsfeld's briefings and New York Times articles, and it does so with a novelistic style that is engrossing and truly moving. The reason for the book's title is simple: the people who go to West Point dedicate their lives to both the most abstract and the most concrete goals of the United States. For every American, those goals are often hard to handle and assimilate, and for none more so than West Point cadets and officers. Absolutely American looks at what it costs individuals to devote themselves to honor, discipline, responsibility and the arts of war. The kind of people with whom I spend most of my time almost never think about the kind of people who make it possible for us to live the way we do. Absolutely American shows us who they are and how they got that way. It's also funny and sexy. I don't think any woman could read this book and not want to dump her civilian boyfriend or husband for one of the "steely-eyed, flat-bellied" officers like Hank Keirsey or Huck Finn (Huck's on the cover; Hank's the centerfold with the cigar). That aside, however, this is an important book. In difficult times, our country depends on the military; the military depends on the Army, and the Army is largely run by West Point graduates. The kicker to all this is unexpected: it seems that West Point cadets and officers are happier than the rest of us. They try harder than we do to be good people who are dedicated to their code, to each other and to their missions, and somehow that makes them more fulfilled and certain about their choices than most civilians. Many of us think that being American means being free--"Hey, it's a free country," we say. Absolutely American posits that real Americans, the most extreme examples of which are those who join the military, live by ideals that are often at odds with personal freedom. Those ideals are: duty, honor, country. I don't know if I could live that way, but reading this book made me think about that as I hadn't before. It also made me laugh and gave me a few new poster boys. I recommend it to anyone who has spent any time at all since September 11th thinking about what it means to be an American.

Loved it from start to finish

Loved it from start to finish. Hit almost all facets of cadet or midshipmen life at all the service academies. Great focus on all aspects of a cadet's military life from the Superintendent down to plebes. More emphasis was needed on the academic side of the equation was in order as this is the true "time consumer" of a cadet's life. It just isn't as glamorous of a topic to talk about.

Great for Beginners, Superb Price Point

Biblical Dream Symbols Dictionary 2nd Edition is a great resource for beginning learners of Christian dream interpretation. Mr. Wolfe notes in the book that his symbol meanings are limited to the dreams he's interpreted over the years and that's what makes this perfect for those just starting out. Mr. Wolfe's website is one of a few that the Dream Team I'm on uses in Level 1 training for new interpreters. This book is an excellent resource to have in a believer's library if for no other reason than the price.

Better Than Referring To Internet

This book has every a symbolic meaning (A to Z) you could think of, rather dream of. It has a short description of the dream
symbol along with a scripture reference (you have to look that up in the Bible). I now refer to this book rather than going to the internet, because it's hard to find a biblical and spiritual read on dreams. I gave it 4 stars because of the cover design, but then again maybe the author had a reason for using the color scheme according to his book.

A great tool to take with you, I have a few books but this one I have with me if I have my phone with me. So I can interpretate dreams and it symbols at work, with friends etc.

In writing the last-mentioned work I had been called upon to pass in review almost all the leading points of specula tion and controversy to which the rapid advance of the sci ence had given rise, and when I proposed to bring out a new edition of the Elements I was strongly urged by my friends not to repeat these theoretical discussions, but to confine myself in the new treatise to those parts of the Ele ments which were most indispensable to a beginner. This was to revert, to a certain extent, to the original plan of the first edition; but I found, after omitting a great number of subjects, that the necessity of bringing up to the day those which remained, and adverting, however briefly, to new dis coveries, made it most difficult to confine the proposed abridgment within moderate limits. Some chapters had to be entirely recast, some additional illustrations to be intro duced, and figures of some organic remains to be replaced by new ones from specimens more perfect than those which had been at my command on former occasions. By these changes the work assumed a form so different from the sixth edition of the Elements, that I resolved to give it a new title and call it the Student's Elements of Geology.

In executing this task I have found it very difficult to meet the requirements of those who' are entirely ignorant of the science. It is only the adept who has already overcomexiv preface.

Geology made simple

This is a great book for those who are just starting out to study Geology. Although I'm a astronomer and physicist I found it interesting and I could relate the information to Astrogeology.

figures missing and that makes the book useless. Dont buy as long as Amazon dont fix the problem.
