About the Author
Stephen Turnbull is recognized as one of the world's foremost military historians of the medieval and early modern periods. He first rose to prominence as a result of his 1977 book, The Samurai: A Military History. Since then he has achieved an equal fame in writing about European military subjects and has had 30 books published. He has always tried to concentrate on the less familiar areas of military history, in particular such topics as Korea, Eastern Europe, the Baltic states and the Teutonic Knights. Turnbull took his first degree at Cambridge University, and has two MAs (in Theology and Military History) from Leeds University. In 1996 he received a PhD from Leeds for his work on Japanese religious history. He travels extensively and also runs a well-used picture library. He currently divides his time between lecturing in Japanese Religion and History at Leeds University and freelance writing.

Surprisingly weak work from a normally excellent writer

I'm a big fan of the writings of Stephen Turnbull and usually have no difficulty recommending his books as good well written primers on Japanese history but in "Samurai women 1184-1877" he has, I'm afraid, delivered a clunker.
In a male dominated society like Japan the idea of women as warriors on the front line seems strange but Turnbull with his usual attention to detail has found numerous cases of just this phenomenon in Japan from the middle ages through the industrialization of Japan in the 19th century.
Turnbull is able to find brilliant anecdotal information on women warriors and is familiar enough with Japanese art of the period to explain how some illustrations from the period show women as warriors. The problem is that is it all anecdotal with no particular thread holding it together except the women are Japanese and armed. There is no sense of a theme or development of the phenomenon or cultural relevance. Turnbull recounts the anecdotes as they pop up, like some bizarre whack-a-mole "there's one! Tell it quick" but lacking any overall theme to make these anything but stories. As they are not always told in chronological order or in context beyond something like: "she was left in charge while her husband went off to the X War" One must be something of a scholar to even put them in context.
Turnbull is a good writer. He knows Japanese history and is usually very good at recounting it to the western reader but in "Samurai women 1184-1877," he has a serious misstep. Instead of being an educational work he has merely related a few interesting tales of a far away land. A far better work might have been on the role of women in medieval Japan with warrior women being a chapter in the greater scheme.

A good stepping stone for anyone interested in Japanese history

A good stepping stone for anyone interested in the subjects of Japanese history and the roll of women in it, however it lacked detail and body, each subject/person mentions is only a few pages in length. The information presented in this book was easy to understand, however, I question some of the facts concerning Oda Nobunaga.I have read many books concerning Japanese history and have read different views of Nobunaga, I disliked the information being presented in a biased, anti-Nobunaga manner. Also I bought this book to specifically understand more about Tomoe Gozen and discovered more concrete facts from Wikipedia. Still I learned a lot and consider this a good buy. It’s easy to read and can be read in a day, a bit longer if your short on time. The illustrations are brilliant and breathtaking as always in a osprey publishing book and it made me want to learn more. I recommend it but feel perhaps reading more would help broaden one’s understanding.

Misunderstood effort to explained Japanese female warriors

Stephen Turnbull is an acknowledge expert on Japanese history, especially dealing with the period where samurai warriors were dominate. His effort to introduced the concept of female Japanese warriors to the western readers proves to be quite enlightening. I think where Turnbull went wrong was that he did not specify exactly what was the role of a woman in a samurai household.
A woman in a Japanese samurai household has certain duties that tends to lean on females duties around the world. Manage the house, look after the children, cook the meals and so forth but they also had one more additional duty that perhaps lady of the castle in England for example, did not have to deal with. And that is to defend the home with weapons. It is said that every warlord's wife know how to fight and her ladies also know how to use a weapon. In the Tokugawa period, the inner chambers of the Shogun's castle where no men are allowed to enter outside of the Shogun, all the guards were females. When a Japanese castle is about to fall, the last ditch defenders are usually the lord's wife and her ladies. I once read that a wife of a Samurai is a samurai in heart and spirit. All this is common knowledge but the author for some reason tried to make it sound like the exception instead of the norm. And perhaps, this is why this book is one of his weaker entries when it should have been one of his stronger ones.
The book is well written in the way it is present. But it take few examples out of history and make it sound unique when in actuality, it more of a norm. Most daughters of the samurai for example, born and raise during the Japan's Senjoku Period, know how to weld a weapon with great deal of effectiveness. They had no choice. Tokugawa Ieysau, the first Tokugawa shogun, picked a woman who would be the famous Kasuga no Tsubone, mostly because she can handled the weapons as effectively as her motherly qualities to be the wet nurse for the third Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu. The book misrepresent the obvious and try to make it what it wasn't, an uniqueness of a woman warrior is fiction. Turnbull probably know this but for some reason, choose not to take that approach.
