Extremely thought provoking

This is a review by someone who has not really studied this topic very much before. Instead of looking at how this might play out in a classroom or such, I am going to review this as someone who bought this for self-study purposes as an introduction to the topic. What I found was a topic and an introduction which completely changed the way I look at all areas of human interaction.
We think of ritual as being about religion. This book shows it's far broader than that. One might almost say that ritual is patterned activity much the way poetry is patterned speech. This book looks at such patterns, whether it is Hopi initiation ceremonies, how mothers greet infant children when they wake up, "giving birth the American way" in a hospital as ritual, or the festivities that go on around Christmas and Thanksgiving. The collection includes essays from a wide range of authors all focusing on these questions.
In the end, a layman reading this book will "wake up" to the complexity of rituals going on all around us all the time and will begin to think about levels of culture and communication that were entirely unconscious before.

Very Dense

I purchased this for a class and it was a very hard book to get through. A lot of the readings are very densely written and can be difficult to get through if you're brand new to the subject. They do generally have interesting content, but it's impossible to agree with every author. That's a good thing, however, because it means you're getting a spectrum of views. If you intend to study religion and ritual behavior, this is a good book to use but a hard one to start from.
