Special emphasis is placed upon the importance of perceiving and communicating the rhythmic life of a musical work, which the author regards as the performer's most fundamental task. A concluding chapter treats the problems of esthetic perception, outlining the philosophical basis underlying the author's approach. The essays are illustrated with numerous music examples, giving concrete form to the principles under discussion. Although directly primarily at the thoughtful performer, the book's insights into musical form and style will be of equal interest to the musically-oriented layman who wishes to increases his perception and discrimination as a listener. Edward Toner Cone (1917 -2004) was an American composer, music theorist, pianist, and philanthropist. He studied composition under Sessions at Princeton, receiving his A.B. in 1939 (Latin salutatorian and the first Princeton student to submit a musical composition as his senior thesis) and was in the first group (with Milton Babbitt, Jan la Rue and Carter Harmon) to earn graduate degrees in music from Princeton (MFA, 1942). He studied piano with Karl Ulrich Schnabel and Edward Steuermann. During World War II, Cone served first in the army (as a pianist) and later in the Office of Strategic Services. Beginning in 1946 he taught at Princeton and was the co-editor of Perspectives of New Music between 1965 and 1969. Cone, known for his contributions to music criticism and analysis, also composed a significant body of music. His scholarly work addresses musical form and aesthetics, particularly questions of rhythm and musical phrasing.

This book is a classic; although it's dated in some ways (e.g. "feminine cadence"), I still use it as a text for the first few weeks of one of my classes. It always sparks good conversations.
